Five Things to Do During Pride Week in NYC
It’s well known that Pride Week was inspired by the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ population in New York City. After the fateful events of the Stonewall Riots, the community would come together year after year to celebrate freedom of expression and livelihood, while standing together in solidarity and strength. This tradition has migrated to cities all over the world.
Almost everything is done bigger in New York City than anywhere else in the world, and Pride Week is no exception. Well over two million people attend Pride events in NYC, and that seems to just be growing as time goes by.
Along with the parade, there are tons of specific activities that you can take advantage of to make 2019’s Pride the most memorable yet. Take a look at the five best things to do during Pride Week in NYC.
OutCinema
The stories and struggles of LGBTQIA+ people throughout history have made for touching art in all spaces, including cinema.
From June 17 through June 19, the SVA Theater will be featuring films that explore the world and struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community. Each film will feature a Q & A session, along with an open bar included in ticket prices.
Gay & Sober
Not all of Pride has to be a party in the traditional sense. As Pride has developed into a more inclusive happening over the years, the organization Gay & Sober has made a space for people trying to avoid drinking-related events.
Gay & Sober puts on a whole host of wellness events during the week of Pride. The events include a dance party, space on their marching float, and more.
Schedule an Exciting Group Outing!
Sometimes it’s good to stray away from the beaten path. Pride makes many parts of NYC an electric mix of energy and entertainment, but there are ways to enjoy Pride while also taking in the sights.
Sea the City offers group jetski outings to take advantage of the beautiful NYC skyline from the Hudson River. The view towers over you, creating a breathtaking backdrop you will never forget.

Voguing Tea Dance
Not all Pride events are sponsored by Pride. The Voguing Tea Dance – held at the Museum of Sex – is a glitzy and glamorous gettogether that will leave you breathless and inspired.
Dancers come and celebrate 80’s glam culture and all the lights, eclectic styles, and pumping musical energy involved. Grab a drink and bask in the dancing talent at the museum’s Disco Bar.

“Reclaiming My Pride”
Pride and the LGBTQIA+ community have been a source of inspiration for artists of all kinds for decades. “Reclaiming My Pride” is an example of that inspiration being used to create stunning visual works that detail the struggle and success of the LGBTQIA+ population, shown at the World Trade Center all of Pride Week.
A portion of each ticket price sold is donated to the Ali Forney Center, an organization that creates support systems for homeless LGBTQIA+ youth.
